Joys and struggles / Osmonds to share how their faith in Christ helps them battle MS

OGDEN -- A special activity this year in recognition of the 75th anniversary of Ogden Pioneer Days is a community interfaith devotional.

The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. July 19 at the Ogden Tabernacle, 2133 Washington Blvd,, will feature Alan Osmond and his sons, David, Scott, Jon, Doug, Michael, Nathan, Alex and Tyler, who perform as David Osmond and the Second Generation.

The event is possible because Alan and Suzanne Osmond will be in town to serve as grand marshals for the parade.

David Osmond and the Osmonds ¬-- The Second Generation will perform in a concert the night before the devotional and will sing the National Anthem at the rodeo July 24.

The event, titled "Overcoming Adversity through Jesus Christ and His Atonement," will include talks by both Alan and David Osmond, and musical tributes, including original music by David Osmond.

"Both Alan and David Osmond battle multiple sclerosis," said Jana Rae Shaw, Ogden Pioneer Days community involvement director. "They have a message to share about daily overcoming adversity."

Shaw said the message of hope and overcoming hardship is one that people of all faiths will find beneficial.

"The Osmonds will honor our diversity as we seek to live out a common voice in response to human suffering," Shaw said.

"It is a universal message of hope for all, no matter the individual circumstance. We welcome and invite everyone to be part of this community gathering."

According to the family's biographical material, Alan Osmond, the oldest of the performing Osmond brothers, has performed all over the world. David Osmond has played to sold-out stadiums and arenas in the United States, Europe and Asia and most recently appeared on American Idol.

Children's Miracle Mardi Gras Ball

Despite economic conditions that have cut budgets at most nonprofit agencies, the 52nd Children's Miracle Mardi Gras Ball had a night to remember for its attendance and the amount of money raised.

Charles Guida, president of St. Rose Dominician Health Foundation, said the ball had 800 guests, a record number, and raised more than $600,000 for St. Rose Dominican Hospitals' pediatric centers.

"It was a tremendous success," he said. "We had 300 more people attend (this year) and we raised $200,000 more."

Guida attributed this success to the efforts of the event's organizing committee, led by Jay Barrett, of Marnell Corrao Associates, Inc., and Lexy Capp, owner of Nannies & Housekeepers USA.

Southern Nevada's longest running fundraising ball featured special guest honorees Donny and Marie Osmond Saturday at the Bellagio.

"The hospital honored them for being one of the founding families of the Children's Miracle Network."

The entertaining duo were joined by performers Domenick Allen, Louie Anderson, Deborah Gibson, David Osmond, Osmonds 2nd Generation, Leigh Zimmerman, Tommy Thayer of Kiss, Doc McGee, RATT and Alan Osmond.

The Miracle "blitz" donation collected about $41,000. Sponsorships and the auction raised about $75,000. Auction items included a Southwest Air trip to a Kiss concert and back stage passes.

Proceeds from the ball benefit the Pediatric Centers at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals, southern Nevada's only not-for-profit, religiously-affiliated hospital system and only local affiliate of Children's Miracle Network.

Social Networking And Charitable Giving

Reported by: Jennifer Stagg
KUTV NEWS

How long would it take you and a group of your friends to raise 5-hundred dollars for charity?

David Osmond says it can happen with just the click of a computer mouse. He is one of the driving forces behind "UPLEJ"-- an online charitable website that combines social networking and non-profit organizations. It's a concept similar to Facebook or Myspace.

You sign up online, pay a little under 5-dollars per month-- and then spread the word to all of your friends and family. One dollar of your donation goes toward your charity, another dollar goes toward the charity of the friend who recruited you, back three degrees.

"The more and more people join, the more money goes to all of these different causes," David said. "Say a thousand of your friends did that-- 4,000 bucks a month. And you spent 4.79. That's it."

Any non-profit charity organization that meets the requirements can become a benefactor on "UPLEJ"-- like "Ascend Alliance," an organization that helps impoverished communities.

When David recruited his friend, well-known entertainer Alex Boye, Alex's contribution goes toward multiple charities.

"This is a great way to give back to people and you don't have to give much of yourself," Alex said.

The list of "UPLEJERS" includes everyone from Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to pop star Debbie Gibson...

They say all it takes is a little bit from everyone to make a big difference.

"The power in numbers is what we're looking for," said Scott Osmond. "The people that join, the more good that can happen."

Alan Osmond and his siblings celebrated 50 years in show business this year. Now his sons are taking center stage for a Christmas charity concert tomorrow. We talked with the brothers during rehearsals this week.

You know the voices, the faces, the name Osmond -- plus a generation. They are Alan and Suzanne's sons. Douglas, David, Nathan, Mike, Tyler, Scott and John are rehearsing for a new variety show. They told us it's in the genes.

"[We've] done Christmas shows together with our dad, his brothers, Marie; and we'd never done one by ourselves. So we did it last year, had a great time with it, and wanted to do it again," David said.

All of this talent has come together for more than a party. They're raising money for a good cause. Proceeds from the concert will go to The MORE Project, a charity that helps impoverished children in Brazil, where John served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"I saw families where their homes were just basically made out of plastic; plastic for walls, kind of to break the wind. So anything that we can do to help people in that type of situation, we're all about that," John said.

They grew up on the Osmond Christmas shows, an American tradition. The brothers say they hope to make theirs an annual event.

"We wanna continue that now. So, it's kind of like the new show in town, and yet it's something that's been around for 50 years," Douglas said.

There are actually eight brothers. Alex is not performing because he's serving an LDS mission in Atlanta.

All Eight Osmond Brothers Earn Eagle Award

Tyler Osmond, Troop 1344, eighth son of Alan and Suzanne Osmond, recently achieved their family’s goal for all of their sons to earn the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America organization.

After all eight finished the cub scout program where Alan served as Cubmaster and Suzanne as Committee Chairman, Suzanne remembers making and racing many fine crafted Pinewood Derby Cars. Each Osmond boy then started training as a Boy Scout and learning to serve others, to be “helpful at all times”, to “Be Prepared” and to live the “Scout Law”.

It started with the first son, Michael. This tradition and goal continued among their family with Nathan, Douglas, David, Scott, Jon, Alex and finally Tyler. Father Alan, a veteran in the Army, taught his sons crafts like archery and shooting skills. He presented each of his Eagle sons a .22 rifle with their Eagle Award.

Ronald Reagan told Alan several years ago that, “a boy who achieves an Eagle Scout Award has one of the best achievements that can be listed on his resume that shows achievement and leadership in his youth!” There are also no better values to be learned, especially in today’s world, than to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave Clean, and Reverent!

Above, they hold a framed picture of all eight sons holding their special Eagle Award.

The Osmond Eagle Scouts

The Osmonds Second Generation is not only a performing group with a well known name, but they are also all Eagle Scouts.

These eight boys, Michael, Nathan, Doug, David, Scott, Jon, Alex and Tyler are the sons of Alan and Suzanne Osmond. Alan and Suzanne have completed training in Scouting and have served as Cubmaster, committee chairman and in Varsity Scouting leadership.

They took very seriously what Ronald Regan said about Scouting: “Scouting and receiving an Eagle Scout Award is one of the best things a young man can have on his résumé showing leadership skills in his youth.”

“We did NOT want our sons to work hard just to get the badges and an Eagle rank but, to learn the values that Scouting teaches! What better program is there than this to teach how to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent?”

Seven of these sons have gone on to teach others those values and use skills they learned in Scouting as they served full-time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Michael served in the Denmark, Copenhagen Mission; Nathan in Chile, Santiago North; Doug
in South Africa, Johannesburg; David in Spain, Madrid; Scott inParaguay, Asuncion North; Jon in Brazil, Brasilia; and Alex is currently serving in Georgia Atlanta North Mission. Tyler is currently still in high school, but plans on serving a mission in the future. Each of them feel Scouting helped them to “Be Prepared” for these experiences and their futures in many ways.

Those that are married have been married in the temple. Scott is currently serving as a Scoutmaster and all are teaching their own children and families Scouting values.

“We believe in the values that Scouting teaches and encourage all families to get behind this program,”
